Question: I would say my hair is drab and dull most days. Yet those models in hair product commercials have hair that is so shiny you need sunglasses. How can I get hair that is shiny like that?

Obviously the type of hair you have affects how shiny it is. In other words, curly hair isn't going to gleam in the sun under the best of circumstances. But let's see if we can't help. Because there are actually a few tricks you can do to make your hair shinier. Well, nine of them to be exact.

First you need to understand that what you eat and the styling products you use affect how glossy your hair is going to be.

Does your diet include sufficient lefty greens and fresh fruit? Including more greens plus whole grains and oily fish is bound to help.

Some find that sprinkling omega-3 fatty acid rich ground flax seed into their bowl of breakfast cereal also kicks up the shine quotient a notch or two.

As you know heat styling is a shine stealer. Strands so damaged tend to deflect, not reflect, light.

You can apply shine serum both before and after you blow dry to make your strands more shiny and sassy.

Also you don't get much sleekness from unwanted product build up. To fix that use a clarifying shampoo two or three times a month. It will not only clear things up but you hair will be more receptive to the moisture available from any conditioners you're using.

Another thing to try is a weekly conditioning mask. Deep conditioning like that can amp up the shine like you won't believe.

Two words: jojoba oil. Chemically similar to the oils our body produces, jojoba oil is a good way to have shiner looking hair that isn't weighed down.

UV rays can wreak havoc on your hair just like they are hard on your skin. So you want to keep them away from it by using a shine spray formulated with UV filters too.

Which reminds me, there are two ways to apply shine spray. Either mist it on your hair brush and brush it on. Or create a bit of a shine spray cloud and walk through it.

So there you have it. Nine secrets that can give you hair with a million dollar shiny hair in no time. Or everything you need to know to make your mane silky, shiny and smooth.
